Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

Add-on for each additional tendon in a tenoplasty, billed with the one-tendon code (R557 or R584) in the hand, forearm, femur, knee or foot listings.

What it covers

E050 is the 'each additional' add-on for tenoplasty in the Musculoskeletal System Surgical Procedures section. It is listed under the one-tendon code in five places: tenoplasty R557 in Hand and Wrist (N13) and Elbow and Forearm (N19), lengthening of hamstrings R557 under Femur (N42), tenoplasty R584 under Knee (N48), and lengthening or shortening R557 under Foot and Ankle (N56).

It is marked #, so premises, equipment, supplies and staff for the procedure itself aren't part of the fee (SP1).

Billing rules

  • Bill E050 once for each tendon after the first; the first tendon is the base code under the same heading, R557 or R584 (N13, N19, N42, N48, N56).
  • Payable only as an add-on to that base code, not on its own (N13).
  • No assistant or anaesthesia units are listed against E050. When several procedures are done under one anaesthetic, the assistant's basic units are those of the major procedure (GP85).
  • Other tendon work has its own add-ons, for example tendon graft E052, tendon transfer E054 and tenolysis E599 (N13, N19).

Often billed with

  • R557 tenoplasty or tendon lengthening, one tendon (N13, N19, N42, N56).
  • R584 tenoplasty, one tendon, in the knee listings (N48).
