What it covers
E797 is an add-on for management of uncomplicated upper or lower gastrointestinal bleeding during endoscopy, by any technique, for example laser, injection, diathermy or banding (S7).
It is printed under four headings: oesophagoscopy-gastroscopy with or without duodenoscopy (Z399, Z400) (S7), small bowel push enteroscopy Z584 (S15), colonoscopy Z496 or Z497 (S18), and sigmoidoscopy with or without anoscopy, Z535, Z536 and Z592 (S25).
Billing rules
- With colonoscopy, payable only with Z496 (signs or symptoms) or Z497 (confirmatory); it isn't listed for the other colonoscopy codes such as Z498 or Z555 (S18).
- Bleeding in a haemodynamically unstable patient with active bleeding during upper endoscopy or push enteroscopy is E798, complicated bleeding, not E797 (S7, S15).
- E797 isn't among the add-ons listed under gastroscopy (Z527, Z547, Z528), which has its own snare polypectomy add-ons E674 and E675 (S11).
- Marked '#': the fee doesn't include premises, equipment, supplies or staff, which are funded by the hospital budget or ICHSC facility costs (GP13).

- Z496 colonoscopy for signs or symptoms, with extent add-ons E740, E741, E747 or E705 (S17, S18).
- Z497 confirmatory colonoscopy after a positive FOBT/FIT or other test (S16, S18).
