Explanation

Minor peripheral nerve block for acute pain lasting more than 4 hours, such as an intercostal, TAP or lateral femoral cutaneous block.

What it covers

G061 is a minor peripheral nerve block for acute pain management (J72). It must be one of: ilioinguinal and/or iliohypogastric, genitofemoral, lateral femoral cutaneous, saphenous, occipital, supraorbital, infraorbital or glossopharyngeal nerve; an intercostal block; a superficial cervical plexus block; a TAP block; or an additional paravertebral injection (J72).

Major peripheral nerve blocks are G060, and major plexus blocks are G260 (J71).

Billing rules

  • Payable only for acute pain (sudden onset, expected to resolve within 6 weeks), including peri- or post-operative pain, and only when the block lasts more than 4 hours (J70).
  • Not payable when you give the block with your own procedure; a post-operative pain block you give with your own procedure is G224 instead (J70).
  • Maximum 4 per patient per physician per day. Additional blocks of nerves in the same distribution aren't payable (J72).
  • An anaesthetist supporting another physician's surgery can bill it in addition to the C-suffix anaesthesia service when it is for post-operative analgesia lasting more than 4 hours (J70).
  • Overall maximum of 8 nerve blocks per patient per day (a bilateral block counts as two). Bilateral procedures pay once per region per side (J70).
  • Image guidance fees (nerve stimulation, ultrasound, fluoroscopy) aren't payable in addition (J70).
  • Listed as a major invasive procedure for after-hours premiums: when non-elective (or delayed by an emergency) and started in the evening, on a weekend or holiday, or at night, add E412 (+20%) or E413 (+40%) as an Emergency Department Physician billing H codes, or E409 (+50%) or E410 (+75%) otherwise (GP103, GP104).

Often billed with

  • G279 percutaneous nerve block catheter insertion (J72).
  • E412/E413 or E409/E410 when non-elective and done after hours (GP104).
