What it covers

G244 is a bilateral femoral nerve block, under Nerve Blocks – Peripheral/Other Injections (J80). One side is G243 (J80).

A femoral nerve block for acute pain is also listed as part of G060 (major peripheral nerve block) under Nerve Blocks for Acute Pain Management. Those listings need a block lasting more than 4 hours (J70, J71).

Billing rules

  • A bilateral block counts as two toward the overall maximum of 8 nerve blocks per patient per day (J79).
  • Not payable when you give the block in conjunction with your own diagnostic, therapeutic or surgical procedure, except G224 for a post-operative pain block (J79).
  • Image guidance fees (nerve stimulation, ultrasound, fluoroscopy) aren't payable in addition (J79).
  • Topical anaesthesia or local infiltration used as an anaesthetic isn't payable, and injection codes listed elsewhere can't be added for the same injection (J79).
  • Add E958 (+50%) when alcohol or another sclerosing solution is used (J82).
  • When an anaesthetist gives a post-operative analgesia block in support of another physician's surgery, only the blocks listed under Acute Pain Management are payable (J70 commentary).
