Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

Therapeutic venisection (phlebotomy done as treatment), any age. Add G700 when it is the only reason for the visit.

What it covers

G483 is therapeutic venisection, listed under Venipuncture in the Cardiovascular part of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures (J7). It is the code for removing blood as a treatment, not for drawing a sample.

Blood drawn for testing is billed by age instead: G480 infant, G482 child, G489 adolescent or adult (J7).

Billing rules

  • Marked (+): add G700 when venisection is the sole reason for the visit, once per visit however many (+) procedures are done (J3, J7).
  • G700 is not payable in hospital, and is paid at 15% of its fee for patients enrolled to a capitation-based group (J3).
  • Payable in addition to a consultation or assessment on the same visit, since D&T procedures aren't included in visit fees unless listed (J3).
  • Venisection isn't one of the GP63 exceptions, so if an employee does it the general delegation rule applies: you must be physically present in the office and immediately available (GP62–GP63).
  • Not on the GP58 list, so it isn't payable on the same day as a counselling service by the same physician (GP58).
  • FHO: not listed in Schedule 2 (core services), so not part of the base rate basket (Agreement pp.75–82).

Often billed with

  • G700 when venisection is the only reason for the visit (J3).
  • An assessment such as A007 when the venisection is done at a regular visit; no G700 then (J3).
