Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

Removal of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD). Not payable the same day as G378 insertion; add E542 when done outside hospital.

What it covers

G552 pays for removing an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) (J46). It is listed under Gynaecology in Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures, and again under procedures on the vagina as removal of an IUD without general anaesthetic (J46, V5).

When the IUD is removed during an examination and/or dilatation under general anaesthetic as the sole procedure, the service is Z735 (V5).

Billing rules

  • Not payable on the same day as G378, insertion of an IUD, so when one IUD is removed and another inserted the same day only G378 is paid (J46).
  • Add E542 when the removal is done outside hospital (J46).
  • Payable in addition to a consultation or assessment the same day (J3).
  • Not marked (+), so the G700 sole-visit premium does not apply (J3, J46).
  • E432, the speculum pelvic exam add-on to A001/A007, is not payable with E542 (A4), so leave E432 off the assessment when E542 is billed for the removal.
  • Not on the GP58 list of exceptions, so G552 is not eligible for payment when the same physician renders any counselling service (K013, K033, K040, K041) to the patient that day (GP58).
  • FHO: a core service listed in Schedule 2 and in Schedule 2B, so for enrolled patients shadow billing is 50% of the fee (Agreement p.59 §4.3–4.4, p.78, p.87). It is also a Schedule 4 office procedure for the office procedures special payment (Agreement p.67 §8.7, p.93).

Often billed with

  • E542 when the IUD is removed outside hospital (J46).
  • A007 or another assessment for the visit (J3); E432 can't be added to it when E542 is billed (A4).
  • G365 with E430 when a cervical screening specimen is collected outside hospital at the same visit. If the assessment billed normally includes a pelvic exam, bill E430 with the assessment instead of G365 (J46, J47).
  • FHO: Q012A with an after-hours A007A for an enrolled patient; the after-hours premium is paid on the listed visit codes, not on G552 (Agreement p.68 §8.12).
