Simple spirometry (volume versus time): vital capacity, FEV1 and FEV1/FVC, with a written interpretation. Technical and professional parts.

What it covers

J301 is a volume versus time study that must include vital capacity, FEV1 and FEV1/FVC, and may include MMEFR (FEF25-75) (H4). A repeat after bronchodilator is J324 (H4).

It has a technical component (T column) and a professional component (P column), claimed separately: technical with suffix B, professional with suffix C (H3, H4).

Billing rules

• Must be the best of three recorded results, with a permanent record that includes your written interpretation, or it is not payable (H4).
• J301 or J324 is not payable the same day as J304 or J327 (flow volume loop) (H4).
• Unlike most pulmonary function tests, J301's technical component is payable in a physician's office (H1, H3).
• Not payable for routine pre-operative screening for non-thoracic surgery unless needed for respiratory diagnosis, anaesthetic decisions or optimizing respiratory disease (H3).
• In a hospital the technical component is paid at 86.10% of the T fee, and not for in-patients (GP11).
• Trained staff may do it while you are off site, for your own patient, with the same chart documentation naming who did it (GP62, GP63).
• FHO: J301C is a Schedule 2 core code (Agreement p.78).
