Form 1 application for psychiatric assessment under the Mental Health Act. Consultations or assessments billed the same day pay nil.

What it covers

K623 is the Form 1 application for psychiatric assessment under the Mental Health Act. It includes the necessary psychiatric history, inquiry and examination, notifying the patient, family, patient representative and relevant authorities, and completing the form (A24, GP34).

A completed Form 1 kept on the patient's chart is enough documentation that a consultation for involuntary psychiatric treatment was requested by the referring physician (A25).

Billing rules

  • Consultations or assessments claimed in addition to certification the same day are payable at nil (A25).
  • Certification of financial incompetence, including the assessment to decide it, is not an insured service (A25).
  • May be given by video or phone as comprehensive virtual care with K300A or K301A; by phone it pays 85% (AJ1, A70).
  • FHO: out of basket (not on Agreement Schedule 2, p.79), and not one of the codes that earn the after-hours premium (Agreement p.68, §8.12).

Often billed with

  • E080 first visit after hospital discharge, office or home, within 2 weeks of an acute in-patient discharge (GP28).
