CritiCall telephone consultation, referring physician: a phone consultation arranged by CritiCall Ontario about managing or transferring a patient.

What it covers

K732 pays the referring physician or nurse practitioner who, knowing the patient, asks a consultant physician's opinion by telephone through CritiCall Ontario, to discuss the patient's management and/or transfer to the consultant (A45).

It includes sending the relevant data to the consultant and everything else you do to get the consultant's advice. The General Preamble consultation rules don't apply (A45).

Billing rules

  • The call must be arranged by, and meet the requirements of, CritiCall Ontario, and you and the patient must be physically in Ontario at the time (A45, A46).
  • Maximum 2 K732 or K736 (any combination) per patient per day (A45).
  • Payable in addition to visits or other services you provide to the same patient the same day (A45).
  • Unlike K730, a CritiCall consultation may be about transferring the patient (A45).
  • The chart must show that CritiCall arranged the call, the patient's name and health number, both physicians, the reason, and the consultant's opinion and recommendations (A46).
  • On duty in an emergency department or hospital urgent care clinic, bill K736 instead; K732 shouldn't be claimed there (A45).
  • Not payable if you're paid other than fee-for-service for the call (A46, A47).
  • FHO: K732 is an in-basket core service (Agreement Schedule 2, p.79).

Often billed with

  • A visit or other service to the same patient the same day, such as A003, which is payable in addition (A45).
  • The consultant bills K733 (with E150 for a neurologist's or neurosurgeon's review of complex neuroimaging), which needs your provider number on the claim (A45, A46, A47).
