Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

Limited resection of axillary or inguinal lymph nodes, one side. Radical resection is R913; a node biopsy alone is Z411.

What it covers

R914 is the limited resection of axillary or inguinal lymph nodes, unilateral, under Lymph Channels in the Haematic and Lymphatic Surgical Procedures section (R2). The Schedule lists 6 assistant units and 6 anaesthesia units for it (R2).

As an R-code it is not an independent operative procedure (only Z codes are, GP4): the procedural fee includes the pre- and post-operative care, but not the major pre-operative visit (SP2, SP4).

Billing rules

  • The listed fee is for one side; when both sides are done, the second side is paid at 85% under the multiple procedure rule (R2, SP2, SP4).
  • With another procedure by the same surgeon under the same anaesthesia, the major procedure is paid in full and the others at 85%, unless the Schedule states otherwise; this also applies to bilateral procedures (SP2).
  • The major pre-operative visit (where the decision to operate is made) is billed separately; the surgeon can't also bill the hospital or day surgery admission assessment unless it is that visit (SP2).
  • Marked # in the Schedule: premises, equipment, supplies and staff for the procedure itself are not part of the physician's fee (SP1).
  • R914 is on the E676 list: E676A (+25% surgeon) and E676B (+6 assistant units) are payable once per patient per physician for a morbidly obese patient (BMI over 40, recorded in the chart) when the SP6 criteria are met, including general anaesthesia; not under local anaesthesia (SP6, SP7).
  • Assistants bill R914B and anaesthetists R914C (SP5).

Often billed with

  • A034 partial assessment or A035 consultation (General Surgery) when it is the major pre-operative visit (A107, SP2).
  • E676A/E676B for a morbidly obese patient (SP6).
