Full general assessment by a geriatrician when a patient is admitted to a long-term care home or chronic care hospital.
What it covers
W272 is the Geriatrics (07) long-term care admission assessment, Type 1 (A122). A Type 1 admission assessment is a general assessment done when the patient is admitted to the long-term care institution (GP49).
Long-term care (W-prefix) services cover chronic care and convalescent hospitals, nursing homes, homes for the aged, and designated chronic or convalescent beds, but not patients in designated palliative care beds (GP49).
Billing rules
- Specialists bill from the Consultations and Visits listing for their own Royal College specialty on file with the Ministry, here Geriatrics (07) (GP9).
- Needs a full general assessment: complete history (presenting complaint, family, past, social and functional inquiry) and an examination of all body parts and systems (GP21, GP49).
- If you did a consultation, general assessment or general re-assessment before admission, OHIP pays a lesser fee; that situation is described as a Type 2 admission assessment (GP49).
- In a nursing home or home for the aged, this service is part of W010 monthly management. If you are the MRP billing W010 for the month, don't bill it separately (GP51–GP52).
- Not on the Appendix J virtual care list, so it is not payable by video or phone (AJ1–AJ3).
