Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

Repeat obstetrics and gynaecology consultation for a long-term care resident: same problem, after another physician's care in between.

What it covers

W306 is a repeat consultation by an obstetrician-gynaecologist for a non-emergency long-term care in-patient (A151). Long-term care in-patient services cover chronic care hospitals, convalescent hospitals, nursing homes, homes for the aged, and designated chronic or convalescent beds, but not designated palliative care beds. Emergency calls and other special visits are billed from the General Listings (A prefix) with premiums (A151; GP49).

A repeat consultation is an additional consultation by the same consultant for the same presenting problem, after another physician has cared for the patient in the interval (GP19). Marked *: includes, where indicated, biopsy of the cervix, collection of cervical cancer screening specimens and examination of trichomonas suspension (A151, note).

Billing rules

  • Needs a new written request, with the same requirements as a consultation (GP19, GP16).
  • If the repeat consultation requirements aren't met, it pays as an assessment (GP18, rule 3b).
  • Repeat consultations don't count toward the consultation limits (GP18, note 1).
  • Specialist consultations and repeat consultations get an age premium for patients under 16: 30% under 30 days, 25% to 1 year, 20% to 2 years, 15% to 5 years, 10% to 16 years (GP64).
  • Not on the Appendix J virtual care lists, so not payable as virtual care (AJ1–AJ2).

Common rejections

  • ARF: 'Missing physician referring number': a consultation needs the referring provider's number from the written request (GP16).
  • A4D: 'Invalid specialty for this service code': these codes are for Obstetrics and Gynaecology (20). Specialists must bill from their own specialty's listings (GP9).
