Single-view chest x-ray. Not payable for routine pre-operative or admission screening without a clinical indication.
What it covers
X090 is a one-view chest radiograph in the Diagnostic Radiology section (D10). Like all radiology codes it has a technical component (H) and a professional component (P), claimed separately (D1, D2).
The professional component covers supervision and quality control of the technical work and interpretation of the film, which the claiming physician must do personally (D1).
Billing rules
- Claim the technical component with suffix B (X090B) and the professional component with suffix C (X090C) (D2, GP11).
- Outside a hospital, only the professional component (suffix C) is billable to OHIP; technical costs go through the Integrated Community Health Services Centres Act (D2, GP11).
- Not payable for routine pre-operative preparation or screening for non-cardiac, non-thoracic surgery unless there is another clinical indication; payable only for symptoms, signs or a guideline-supported indication (D3).
- Routine chest x-rays for screening or hospital admission without clinical indication are not payable (D3), and a miniature chest film for survey purposes only is not an insured benefit (D10).
- Chest studies should not be done routinely in mammography or gastrointestinal examinations (D3).
- The technical component is not payable for an in-patient, or for a patient admitted to the same hospital within 24 hours for the same condition (GP11).
Common rejections
- ARF: OHIP describes this as 'Missing Physician Referring Number'. Radiology is done on request and the report goes to the referring provider (D1); add the ordering provider's billing number and resubmit.
