What it covers

Z528 is a subsequent gastroscopy, done within three months after a previous gastroscopy (S11).

The first gastroscopy is Z527 (may include biopsies, photography and removal of polyps 1 cm or less); gastroscopy with foreign body removal is Z547 (S11).

Billing rules

  • Use when the previous gastroscopy was within the past three months (S11).
  • E674 and E675 snare polypectomy (polyps over 1 cm) are payable with Z528 (S11).
  • Anaesthesia is 4 basic units (S11).
  • Laryngoscopy Z292 at the same time is not payable unless done for suspected laryngeal disease; those claims go to manual review with a written explanation (S8, S11).
  • Patients under 16 get an age premium of 10% to 30% (GP64).
  • It is a Z-code (IOP): if you made the decision to scope at a visit in the past 12 months, only a partial assessment (specialist) or minor assessment (family physician) is payable that day before it (SP4 §13).

Often billed with

  • E674 first polyp over 1 cm by snare (maximum 1) and E675 each additional (maximum 2) (S11).
