Debridement under the microscope of a mastoid cavity or an ear with significant external or middle ear pathology, one side.

What it covers

Z907 is debridement under microscopy of mastoid cavities and/or ears with significant external or middle ear pathology, but not for removal of cerumen (Y16).

Debridement with loupes or a magnifying headlight, without significant pathology, or for wax removal is not Z907 (Y16).

Billing rules

  • Must be under microscopy, for significant external or middle ear pathology; not for cerumen (Y16).
  • Debridement under microscopy done only for access during another procedure is not claimed (Y14).
  • The other ear is paid at 85% of the listed fee (Y16).
  • G420 ear syringing/debridement is not payable with Z906, Z907, Z908 or Z913 (Y16, J97).
  • Z codes are independent operative procedures (IOP), payable in addition to an assessment. If you made the decision to operate in the past 12 months, only a partial assessment (specialist) or minor assessment (GP) is payable before the IOP that day; if the decision is the same day, no other assessment before it is paid (GP4, SP4).

Often billed with

  • A244 partial assessment, within the IOP rules (SP4).
