What it covers
The Ministry's list describes 311 as 'Depressive disorder or other non-psychotic disorders, not elsewhere classified', under Mental and Behavioural Disorders. The wording was updated in March 2026 (INFOBulletin 260314).
Use it for depression and low mood when no more specific code fits. Because it ends in 'not elsewhere classified', it also covers a non-psychotic mental health problem that has no code of its own in the list.
Close neighbours: 296 for mood disorders, which the list says include a depressive episode as well as bipolar disorder; 300 for anxiety and stress-related disorders; 309 for an adjustment reaction after a life event.
Billing notes
- Family physicians bill time spent on mental health care as K005, primary mental health care, per half-hour unit (A21).
- K005 isn't payable with another consultation or visit by the same physician on the same day unless the two services have clearly different diagnoses (A21, GP55).
Related codes: 296, 300, 309, 301
