What it covers

The Ministry's list describes 780 as 'Signs and Symptoms Not Yet Diagnosed: Convulsions, ataxia, vertigo, headache, except tension headache and migraine'. It sits at the end of the Nervous System and Sense Organs chapter, and appears again under Symptoms, Signs and Ill-Defined Conditions as 'Ataxia'.

Use it while the cause is still being worked out: a first seizure or febrile convulsion, dizziness or vertigo, unsteadiness, or a headache that isn't migraine or tension type. In ICD-9, the system the list is based on, 780 is also where general symptoms such as fever, fatigue and weakness are filed.

Once there is a diagnosis, use its code: 345 epilepsy, 346 migraine and other headache types, 386 Meniere's disease or labyrinthitis, 795 myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, 297 delirium. Symptoms of one body system have their own codes: 785 heart and circulation (chest pain, fainting), 786 breathing, 787 digestive, 788 urinary, 781 muscles and joints.

Related codes: 781, 785, 786, 787, 788, 799, 345, 346
