What it covers

The Ministry's list describes 917 as 'Annual health examination adolescent/adult' and files it under Supplementary Classifications, with other codes that describe the reason for a visit rather than a disease. The same entry also names well vision care.

It fits the visit the Schedule calls a periodic health visit: a check-up for a patient over two who has no apparent acute physical or mental illness, with an age- and gender-appropriate history, examination, screening and counselling (GP21).

For a baby's well visit in the first two years, use 916 (well baby care). If the patient comes in with a problem, the visit isn't a periodic health visit; bill the assessment with the code for the problem.

Billing notes

  • Periodic health visit fee codes: K017 child, K130 adolescent, K131 adult 18 to 64, K132 adult 65 and older, K133 adult with intellectual and developmental disability; paediatricians bill K267 (2 to 11 years) and K269 (12 to 17 years) (GP22).
  • One periodic health visit per patient per physician per 12 months; visits over the limit aren't insured (GP21).
  • The Schedule says no diagnostic code is required on a periodic health visit claim unless one is specifically listed (GP21).
  • K133 is the exception: the claim must carry one of 299, 319, 343, 741 or 758 for the patient's condition (A8–A9).
