Code
DR
Description
Self-Referred Diagnostic Services Payable at 50%

Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

DR means OHIP paid this diagnostic service at 50% because it was treated as self-referred. Check the referring physician on the claim.

What it means

DR appears on the Remittance Advice (RA) when a diagnostic service is paid at 50% of the fee because OHIP treated it as self-referred. It explains a reduced payment. It is not a rejection.

The Ministry's description is the only source we have for this rule. Check the payment against the claim before deciding whether to follow up.

How to fix it

  1. Check the referring physician field on the claim.
  2. If another physician referred the patient, make sure their billing number was on the claim. Fix your claim settings so future claims carry it.
  3. If the service was referred by someone else and you think the 50% reduction is wrong, send a Remittance Advice Inquiry (RAI) through eSubmit, or on form 0918-84, within 7 months of the RA date, with the referral details.

Don't resubmit if

  • The claim is already on your RA. A new claim for the same service will be treated as a duplicate. Use an RAI instead.

How APEX handles it
