Code
DT
Description
In-patient technical fee not allowed

Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

DT means the technical fee wasn't paid because the patient was a hospital in-patient. Only the professional component is payable.

What it means

DT appears on the Remittance Advice (RA) when OHIP refuses the technical component of a diagnostic service because the patient was a hospital in-patient.

Under the Schedule, the technical component of a diagnostic service listed as "technical component" or under an "H" or "T" column is not payable if the patient is an in-patient, or if the patient is admitted to the same hospital within 24 hours of the service for the same condition (page GP11). The hospital's budget covers it. The professional component (C suffix) can still be paid.

Common causes

  • The patient was a hospital in-patient on the service date
  • The patient was admitted to the same hospital within 24 hours of the diagnostic service, for the same condition
  • The technical (B suffix) and professional (C suffix) components were both billed for an in-patient

How to fix it

  1. Check the patient's admission status and admission date for the service date.
  2. If the patient was an in-patient, or was admitted within 24 hours for the same condition, the technical fee is not payable. Bill only the professional component.
  3. If the patient was not admitted, send a Remittance Advice Inquiry (RAI) through eSubmit, or on form 0918-84, within 7 months of the RA date, with the admission details.

Don't resubmit if

  • The patient was an in-patient, or was admitted within 24 hours for the same condition.
  • The claim is already on your RA. A new claim for the same service will be treated as a duplicate. Use an RAI instead.
