Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

Repeat consultation by the same ophthalmologist for the same problem after another physician has cared for the patient in between. Needs a new referral.

What it covers

A repeat consultation is an additional consultation by the same consultant for the same presenting problem, after another physician has cared for the patient in the interval since the first consultation (GP19).

It has the same requirements as a consultation, including a new written request from the referring physician or nurse practitioner (GP19).

Billing rules

  • A new written, signed referral is required (GP19, GP16).
  • Another physician must have provided care between the first consultation and the repeat consultation (GP19).
  • Repeat consultations don't count toward the consultation limits (GP18). If the repeat-consultation requirements aren't met, it pays as a specific assessment (GP17–GP18).
  • Age premiums for patients under 16 apply to repeat consultations by specialists (GP64).
  • Video only, with an existing relationship; add K300A (AJ2, A70).
  • Detention (K001) may start after 60 minutes (GP30).

Often billed with

  • A230 orthoptic assessment (A156).

Common rejections

  • ARF: The claim is missing the referring provider's number. A consultation needs a written request that names the referring physician or nurse practitioner and their billing number (GP16).
  • AT2: Must include video modality: A236 is video-only and can't be billed by telephone (AJ2).
