Explanation

Plastic surgeon's specific assessment of a hospital in-patient: full history of the complaint and detailed exam of the affected area.
What it covers
A specific assessment requires a full history of the presenting complaint and a detailed exam of the affected part(s), region(s) or system(s) needed to make a diagnosis, exclude disease or assess function (GP23).
C083 is the non-emergency hospital in-patient listing for plastic surgery (A181).
Billing rules
- Specific assessments are limited to 1 per patient per physician per 12 months (2 if the second visit has a clearly different, unrelated diagnosis); extras are paid as a lesser assessment (GP23).
- A surgeon can't bill the hospital admission assessment unless it is the major pre-operative visit (SP2, GP40).
- An admission assessment of a patient you haven't assessed for the same illness in the prior 90 days counts as a consultation or specific assessment; if you have, it is a specific re-assessment (GP40).
- By video only (not phone), and for in-patients only if you aren't the MRP, no local physician with the expertise is available (documented by the referrer), and the referrer assessed the patient in person within the prior 30 days (Appendix J, A69).
- For emergency calls and other special visits to in-patients, use the general listings (A-prefix) with special visit premiums instead (A181, GP65–GP78).
