Explanation

Routine hospital visit by a consultant who keeps directing care while the family physician stays most responsible. Limited per week.

What it covers

Concurrent care is any routine assessment in hospital by the consultant after their first major assessment, when the family physician remains the most responsible physician but asks the consultant to keep giving directive care (GP48).

C138 is the concurrent care visit in the Internal Medicine (13) in-patient listings (A130).

Billing rules

  • Specialists bill from the Consultations and Visits listing for their own Royal College specialty on file with the Ministry, here Internal Medicine (13) (GP9).
  • Limited to 4 claims per week in the first week of concurrent care and 2 per week after that; extra visits are not payable (GP48).
  • Bill this instead of a subsequent visit when the family physician, not you, is the MRP (GP48).
  • Not on the Appendix J virtual care list, so it is not payable by video or phone (AJ1–AJ3).

Common rejections

  • AM1: OHIP describes this as 'Service limit exceeded': more concurrent care visits than the weekly limit (GP48).
