C882A — Hospital palliative care visit
Hospital palliative care visit
Bill when the most responsible physician visits a hospital patient to give palliative care, or any patient in a designated palliative care bed.
Watch for: Must be the most responsible physician; an unexpected death after a long stay for another diagnosis isn't palliative care.

Explanation

Hospital visit by the most responsible physician to give palliative care. Also used for any patient in a designated palliative care bed.
What it covers
A palliative care assessment is any routine assessment by the MRP to provide palliative care (GP50). C882 is the Family Practice hospital code for these visits (A13).
Palliative care visits to patients in designated palliative care beds, in any type of facility, are claimed as C882 (or C982 for specialties that list it) (GP50). Palliative care means care in the final year of life, with no aggressive treatment of the underlying disease and care aimed at comfort (GP5).
Billing rules
- Rendered by the MRP (GP50).
- Not palliative care when a patient dies unexpectedly after a long stay for an unrelated diagnosis (GP50).
- Add E083, or E084 on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, when you are the MRP; not for designated palliative care beds in LTC institutions (GP47).
- For 20 minutes or more of pain and symptom management, support or counselling, K023 may be billed instead; no other Family Practice visit code is payable with K023 (A2; OMA palliative guide p.8).
- Qualifies for the automatic hospitalist premium for eligible physicians (GP103).
- FHO: listed in Schedule 2 (Agreement p.76) and counts toward the palliative care special payment (Agreement p.66 §8.6).
Often billed with
- E083 or E084 MRP premium (GP47).
