Surgeon's fee when surgery is cancelled after the anaesthetic has begun, because of a complication, before the operation starts.

What it covers

E006A applies when an anaesthetic has begun but the operation is cancelled because of a complication before surgery starts, and the surgeon has scrubbed but is not required to do anything further (SP7).

The amount is 6 basic units plus time units, multiplied by the surgical assistant's unit fee (SP7).

Billing rules

• Bill as E006A: 6 basic units plus time units (SP7).
• The surgeon's time units are calculated the same way as for a surgical assistant (SP7, GP85).
• Cancelled before induction of anaesthesia: bill a subsequent hospital visit instead (SP7).
• Cancelled after surgery has started but before it is finished: claim under independent consideration (R990), adding time units to the listed procedural basic units, with a copy of the operative report (SP7).
• The assistant bills E006B and the anaesthesiologist E006C for the same situation (GP90, GP95).
