Routine hospital in-patient visit after the admission assessment, during the first five weeks of the stay. Limit one per patient per day.
What it covers
A subsequent visit is any routine assessment in hospital after the admission assessment (GP43). C002 is the Family Practice code for subsequent visits in the first five weeks after admission (A13).
It also covers attendance at surgery when the patient asks the referring physician to be present but not assist, and each physician's visit when several disciplines care for a complex patient (GP43).
Billing rules
- Limit one subsequent visit per patient per day for the first 5 weeks after admission; extra visits are not payable (GP43).
- If the patient was referred to you in hospital, count weeks from the date you first assessed the patient; if care was transferred to you, count from the actual admission date (GP43).
- If you are already in hospital and see your own or a transferred patient, it is a subsequent visit; seeing another physician's patient on an emergency basis uses the A-prefix General Listings (GP43).
- As MRP, the first and second days after the admission assessment are C122 and C123, and the discharge day is C124 or C126 (GP44, GP45).
- Add E083 (MRP premium) or, on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, E084, when you are the MRP; only one per patient per day (GP47).
- Qualifies for the automatic hospitalist premium for eligible FPs and internists with high in-patient volumes (GP103).
- Detention (K001) can start only after 30 minutes of a subsequent hospital visit (GP30).
- FHO: counts toward the hospital services special payment (Agreement Schedule 3, p.90; §8.5, p.66). In-patient services to enrolled patients are paid full fee-for-service (Agreement p.64 §7.2).
Often billed with
- E083 or E084 MRP premium (GP47).
- C101 ICU/CCU visit premium, for each patient seen on a visit to an ICU or CCU (GP103).
Common rejections
- AM1: 'Service limit exceeded': a second subsequent visit was billed for the same patient on the same day during the first 5 weeks (GP43).
