Explanation

Anaesthesia extra units (5) when the anaesthetist gives an anaesthetic to a newborn up to 28 days old. Billed with the C suffix.
What it covers
E014C adds 5 extra units, on top of the basic units, when an anaesthesiologist gives an anaesthetic to a newborn up to 28 days of age (GP97). It sits in the age-based extra units with E021C (premature newborn under 37 weeks gestational age, 9 units), E009C (29 days to 1 year, 4 units) and E019C (1 to 8 years, 2 units) (GP97).
The anaesthesia fee is the total of basic and time units multiplied by the anaesthesiologist unit fee (GP92). References to an anaesthesiologist mean any physician giving the anaesthetic, outside the Consultations and Visits listings (GP92).
Billing rules
- Bill with the C suffix, as for other anaesthesia services (GP93).
- Not payable with E030C or E031C, anaesthesia in support of nerve block procedures by another physician (GP99).
- Not payable with E003C supportive care or monitoring (GP102).
- Not payable with obstetrical anaesthesia P016C or E100C, and not with P014C, where only E010C, E022C and E017C are allowed (K9).
- Payable with E023C (ocular surgery, cystoscopy, examination under anaesthesia) and E032C (colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy) anaesthesia (GP100).
Often billed with
- The C-suffix anaesthesia code for the procedure, with its basic and time units (GP92, GP93).
- E400C (+50%) or E401C (+75%) when the case starts in the evening, on a weekend or holiday, or at night; these increase the total anaesthetic fee (GP94).
Common rejections
- V23: OHIP questioned the number of services on the line; check the count and that the code carries the C suffix for the anaesthetist's service (GP93).
