Billing rules

  • Only payable with the base codes it is listed against (R1, S9, S12–S14, S20, S21, S25, S29, S32, S38, W2).
  • The premium is a percentage of the listed procedure fee (R1).
  • When the laparoscope is simply the way in for an intra-abdominal procedure, a separate laparoscopy code is not payable (S33).
  • If the laparoscopic attempt is converted to laparotomy, bill the open procedure plus E860 instead (SP5).

Often billed with

  • S167, S166 or S171 bowel resections (S20).
  • R905 splenectomy (R1).
  • S344 ventral or incisional hernia repair with mesh (S38).

Common rejections

  • ADF: OHIP describes this as 'Corresponding procedure invalid, omitted or paid at zero': E793 was billed without a payable listed base procedure (for example R905, S167 or S344) for the same patient and day.
