Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

Add-on for a paracervical block given in the office by the physician doing endometrial sampling, ablation or curettage.

What it covers

E861 is a paracervical block, unilateral or bilateral, payable in addition to endometrial sampling, endometrial ablation or curettage done by the same physician in an office (V7).

Normally an anaesthetic or nerve block given by the physician doing the procedure is not payable (SP5, §20); E861 is the specific listing for this block.

Billing rules

  • Only with endometrial sampling (Z770), endometrial ablation (S772) or curettage by the same physician (V7).
  • Only in an office (V7).
  • One fee whether the block is unilateral or bilateral (V7).
  • Marked #: premises, equipment and staff are not included (V7).

Often billed with

  • Z770 endometrial sampling, with E542 outside hospital (V7).
  • S772 endometrial ablation (V7).

Common rejections

  • ADF: The base procedure (endometrial sampling, ablation or curettage) was missing, invalid or paid at zero; E861 is only payable with it (V7).
