Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

Intravenous injection or infusion for a child, adolescent or adult (age 2 and over). Not claimable for injections into an IV already in place.

What it covers

G379 is an intravenous injection or infusion for a patient aged 2 or older: a child (2 to 15), an adolescent (16 or 17) or an adult (18 and over) (J55, GP2). Newborns and infants are G376 (J55).

It also applies to cryoprecipitate infusion (J55). Chemotherapy infusions have their own codes (G381, G345, G359), which include venipuncture and establishing vascular access (J57).

Billing rules

  • Injections into an IV apparatus that is already established can't be claimed; G381 is the only exception (J55).
  • Not claimable with x-rays; the Schedule treats it as included in that service (J55).
  • With photodynamic therapy (G460 or G461) for the same patient, G379 is insured but paid at nil (J96).
  • Marked (+): when the IV is the sole reason for the visit, add G700, once per patient per day however many (+) procedures are done. G700 is not payable in hospital (J3, J55).
  • One of the procedures eligible for the after-hours procedure premiums when non-elective: E409/E410, or E412/E413 for an emergency department physician billing H-prefix codes (GP103–GP104).
  • For a nursing home or home for the aged patient, G379 is a component of W010 monthly management: when W010 is paid, G379 by any physician that month isn't eligible for payment (GP51–GP52).
  • FHO: a Schedule 2 core (in-basket) service, and in Schedule 2A for long-term care patients (Agreement p.77, p.84).

Often billed with

  • A consultation or assessment the same day, such as general surgery A035 or A034; procedures are payable in addition to a consultation or assessment (J3).
  • G700 when the IV is the only reason for an office visit (J3).
