Professional component of a complete nerve conduction and needle EMG study (Schedule A) on two or more nerves.

What it covers

Schedule A is the complete procedure: conduction studies on two or more nerves presumed involved in the disease, with EMG of the appropriate muscles as needed and/or detailed neuromuscular transmission studies. It includes study of normal nerve and/or the opposite side for comparison as needed (J103).

The technical component is G455 (J103).

Billing rules

  • If the patient is referred directly to the EMG/nerve conduction facility for testing, a consultation or assessment by you is not payable, unless the referring provider also asks for a medically necessary consultation or assessment (J103).
  • Schedules A, B, C and single fibre EMG require an intramuscular needle recording electrode. Surface EMG and other EMG techniques are not payable (J103).
  • Late responses or reflexes are included if done. Keep a permanent record of the nerve conduction study in the chart (J103).
  • G473 (Schedule C professional) is not payable with G456 for the same patient the same day (J104).
  • You must personally interpret the results. Supervision and monitoring may be delegated to another physician (J1).

Often billed with

  • G455 Schedule A technical component (J103).

Common rejections

  • ADH: OHIP describes this as 'Cannot be billed together': G473 and G456 can't be paid for the same patient the same day (J104).
