Explanation

Professional component (interpretation) of a complete 1- and 2-dimensional echocardiogram, including Doppler when done.

What it covers

G571 is the professional component of a complete echocardiography study in 1 and 2 dimensions; the technical component is G570 (J21).

A complete study must at least acquire, record and store images of all components of cardiac structure and function: chambers, valves, septae, pericardium and proximal great vessels. A cardiac Doppler study (with or without colour) is included when done. If a component can't be imaged for reasons beyond your control, it still pays as a complete study (J21).

Billing rules

  • Document the required components and findings, keep a permanent dynamic recording (video or digital) of the images and measurements, and note why any component couldn't be imaged (J21).
  • G570, G571, G574 and G575 are not payable with stress echo G582 or G583 (J21).
  • Payable only at a facility with echocardiography accreditation (or provisional recognition) from an MOH-approved body, such as Accreditation Canada Diagnostics (J20).
  • You must have Level III or Level II echocardiography training, or interpret at least 400 echo/Doppler studies a year in an established lab plus 24 hours of relevant CME over two years; keep proof for the MOH (J20).
  • Must be for an indication in the CorHealth Standards for Provision of Echocardiography in Ontario in effect on the service date (J20).
  • The accreditation, training and indication rules don't apply to patients 17 or younger, fetal echo, or peri-operative TEE (J20).
  • Not payable for routine pre-operative preparation or screening unless there is another clinical indication (J20).
  • You must personally interpret the results to bill the professional component (J1).

Often billed with

  • G570 technical component (J21).
  • G579 saline study (J25).
  • G585 contrast requires G571 or G583 to be payable for the same study (J23).
