Professional component (interpretation) of a stress echocardiogram. Needs an accredited facility, qualified reader and a listed indication.
What it covers
G583 is the professional component of a stress echocardiography study; G582 is the technical component (J21). The study must include a baseline study of all cardiac components, stress images including peak or immediate post-stress images, and a simultaneous comparison of all left ventricular wall segments and global function before and after stress (J21).
Stress may be induced by exercise, drugs or pacing (J21). Echocardiography includes cardiac monitoring and/or oximetry when rendered (J20).
Billing rules
- Payable only when done at a facility accredited or provisionally recognized by an MOH-approved body, by a physician with Level II or III echo training or the documented reading volume and CME set out on J20, for an indication in the Standards for Provision of Echocardiography in Ontario (J20).
- Those three requirements don't apply to patients 17 or younger, fetal echo or perioperative TEE (J20).
- Not payable for routine preoperative screening without a clinical indication beyond the surgery (J20).
- G570, G571, G574 and G575 are not payable with G582 or G583 (J21).
- The report must document the required components and the pre-stress vs stress comparison, and a permanent high-frame-rate dynamic recording must be kept (J22).
- Interpretation must be done personally by the physician who claims the professional component (J1).
- Oximetry J323 and J332 are not payable with G583 (H6).
Often billed with
- G582 technical component for the same study (J21).
- G585 contrast add-on to G582 for difficult-to-image patients, which needs G583 payable for the same study (J23).
