Routine care of a well newborn for up to the first 10 days of life, in hospital or at home. One per baby.

What it covers

Newborn care is the routine care of a well newborn for up to the first ten days of life in hospital or at home. It includes an initial general assessment, any later assessments needed, and instructions to the caregivers about the newborn's health care (GP32).

Billing rules

  • Maximum one per patient, except when a well baby is transferred to another hospital; then a physician at each hospital may be paid (GP33).
  • A special visit premium can be added if you must make an extra hospital visit outside your normal rounds to discharge the newborn the same day (GP33).
  • If you take over a well newborn from an obstetrician who routinely transfers newborns, bill newborn care (plus H007 if you attended the delivery), not a consultation (K3).
  • FHO: H001 counts toward the hospital services special payment (Schedule 3) (Agreement p.91, §8.5).

Often billed with

  • H007 attendance at a high-risk delivery (K3).
