Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

Additional routine orthopaedic visits to a chronic care or convalescent hospital patient after the first 4 in a month, up to 6 per month.

What it covers

W061 is the Orthopaedic Surgery (06) additional subsequent visit in a chronic care or convalescent hospital, with a maximum of 6 per patient per month (A165). It follows the first 4 monthly visits billed as W062 (A165).

Billing rules

  • Maximum of 6 per patient per month (A165).
  • Subsequent visit limits are those printed with each code (GP49).
  • Visits for an acute intercurrent illness are billed as W121, which doesn't depend on the monthly limit (GP49).
  • Seeing your own patient while already in the institution uses the W-prefix codes; seeing another physician's patient on an emergency basis uses the General Listings (A-prefix) (GP49).
  • Not a virtual care code: W061 isn't in Appendix J (AJ1–AJ3).

Often billed with

  • W121 for acute intercurrent illness (GP49).

Common rejections

  • AM1: OHIP describes this as 'Service limit exceeded': more W061 visits in the month than the listed maximum (A165).
