Type 1 admission assessment: a full general assessment of a patient on admission to a long-term care institution.

What it covers

A Type 1 admission assessment is a general assessment of a patient on admission (GP49). A general assessment needs a full history and an exam of all body parts and systems (GP21).

W-prefix codes apply to patients in chronic care or convalescent hospitals, nursing homes, homes for the aged and designated chronic or convalescent beds, but not designated palliative care beds (GP49).

Billing rules

  • If you did a consultation, general assessment or general re-assessment of the patient before admission, it is paid at a lesser fee; bill W104 (Type 2) for that situation (GP49).
  • Patients 65 and over: the fee is increased by 15% automatically (GP64).
  • An admission assessment with a new admission lets W010 qualify that month with fewer than two assessments (GP52).
  • Included in W010 when the MRP bills the monthly management fee for that month; don't bill it separately then (GP51, GP52).
  • FHO: a Schedule 2A code for enrolled LTC patients (Agreement p.86) and counts toward the long-term care special payment (Agreement p.67 §8.10).

Often billed with

  • E079 smoking cessation initial discussion (A56).
