Explanation

Full general assessment by an internist when a patient is admitted to a long-term care home or chronic care hospital.

What it covers

W232 is the Internal Medicine (13) long-term care admission assessment, Type 1 (A131). A Type 1 admission assessment is a general assessment done when the patient is admitted to the long-term care institution (GP49).

Long-term care (W-prefix) services cover chronic care and convalescent hospitals, nursing homes, homes for the aged, and designated chronic or convalescent beds, but not patients in designated palliative care beds (GP49).

Billing rules

  • Specialists bill from the Consultations and Visits listing for their own Royal College specialty on file with the Ministry, here Internal Medicine (13) (GP9).
  • Needs a full general assessment: complete history (presenting complaint, family, past, social and functional inquiry) and an examination of all body parts and systems (GP21, GP49).
  • If you did a consultation, general assessment or general re-assessment before admission, OHIP pays a lesser fee; that situation is described as a Type 2 admission assessment (GP49).
  • Not on the Appendix J virtual care list, so it is not payable by video or phone (AJ1–AJ3).
