Incision and drainage of one subcutaneous abscess or haematoma under general anaesthetic. E515 adds 110% when it's the sole procedure in an OR.
What it covers
Z102 is incision and drainage of a single subcutaneous abscess or haematoma under general anaesthetic (M1). Two or more subcutaneous abscesses under general anaesthetic are Z172 (M1).
When no anaesthetic is needed, or it is done under local, the local anaesthetic listing (Z101) applies instead (SP5, M1).
Billing rules
- Bill only when the drainage is done under general anaesthetic; otherwise use Z101 (SP5, M1).
- E515 (add 110%) applies when the incision is the sole procedure under general anaesthetic in an operating room, but not in an emergency department or emergency department equivalent (M1).
- E542 is listed only under the local anaesthetic abscess codes, not under Z102 (M1).
- Marked #: premises, equipment, supplies and personnel are not included in the fee, and in hospital are funded by the hospital budget (SP1, GP13).
Often billed with
- E515 when it is the sole procedure under general anaesthetic in an operating room (M1).
- An assessment at the visit where the decision to operate is made, which is the major pre-operative visit (GP4, SP4).
