What it covers
Z543 is endoscopy of the anal canal, anoscopy (proctoscopy), listed under Rectum (S27).
As a Z code it is an independent operative procedure, payable in addition to an assessment (GP4). It has no '#' prefix, so the fee includes premises, equipment and supplies (SP1).
Billing rules
- The fees for excision, ligation and injection of haemorrhoids and treatment of intra- or perianal condylomata acuminata include anoscopy, so Z543 isn't added to them (S27).
- Rigid sigmoidoscopy is listed as 'with or without anoscopy' (Z535, Z536), so the sigmoidoscopy code covers an anoscopy done with it (S25).
- If you did the major pre-operative visit in the previous 12 months, only a minor assessment (GP/FP) or partial assessment (specialist) is payable before Z543 that day; if the decision is made that day, that visit is billable but no other assessment before the procedure (SP4).
- FHO: a Schedule 2 core (in-basket) service and one of the Schedule 2B codes with 50% total shadow billing for enrolled patients (Agreement p.59 §4.3-4.4, p.82, p.88).
