What it covers
Z546 is Barron ligation(s) of haemorrhoids, listed under Rectum (S28). Barron ligation combined with cryotherapy is Z566, and complete haemorrhoidectomy using cryotherapy and/or Barron ligation(s) with rectal dilation is Z565 (S28).
As a Z code it is an independent operative procedure, payable in addition to an assessment (GP4).
Billing rules
- Not to exceed 6 in any one year (S28).
- Anoscopy is included in haemorrhoid ligation, so Z543 isn't billed with Z546 (S27).
- No surgical assistant fee is payable (Asst nil) (S28).
- If you did the major pre-operative visit in the previous 12 months, only a partial assessment (specialist) or minor assessment (GP/FP) is payable before the ligation that day (SP4).
- Marked '#': the fee doesn't include premises, equipment, supplies or staff, which are funded by the hospital budget or ICHSC facility costs; patients can't be charged for them (GP13).
Often billed with
- A034 partial assessment at a return ligation visit, or A035 consultation when the decision to treat is made that day (SP4, A107).
- U990 (first person seen) or U991 (additional person seen) weekday daytime hospital out-patient premiums only for a special visit for a non-elective service, claimed with the consultation or assessment, not with the ligation (GP65, GP66, GP71).
