Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

Incision and drainage of an abscess of the vulva, Bartholin's or Skene's gland under local anaesthetic. Add E542 when done outside hospital.

What it covers

Z714 is incision and drainage of an abscess of the vulva, Bartholin's gland or Skene's gland done under local anaesthetic (V2). The same drainage under general anaesthetic is Z715, and marsupialization of a Bartholin's cyst or abscess is Z716 (V2).

It is a Z-prefix independent operative procedure (IOP), payable in addition to an assessment (GP4). It has no # prefix, so its fee includes the premises, equipment, supplies and staff for the procedure (SP1).

Billing rules

  • Add E542 when the procedure is done outside a hospital (V2).
  • If you made the decision to operate at a major pre-operative visit in the previous 12 months, only a minor assessment (family physicians) or a partial assessment (specialists) is payable the same day before Z714 (SP4).
  • If the major pre-operative assessment is on the same day as Z714, no other consultation or assessment before the procedure is payable that day (SP4).
  • If you also assess and treat an unrelated, significant problem in another body system at the same visit, bill the appropriate assessment as well (SP4).
  • FHO: Z714A done in the physician's office for enrolled patients counts toward the Special Payment for Office Procedures (Agreement p.67 §8.7, Schedule 4 p.97).

Often billed with

  • E542 when performed outside hospital (V2).
  • An assessment such as A007 when the visit leads to the procedure, since an IOP is paid in addition to the assessment, subject to the 12-month pre-operative visit rule (GP4, SP4).

Common rejections

  • A2B: OHIP flagged the service as not usual for the sex on the patient's OHIP record. Z714 is a female genital procedure, so check the health number and patient details on the claim.
