53 — Paid per a previous Schedule of Benefits
Paid at earlier fee
OHIP paid this line under the earlier Schedule of Benefits that was in effect on the service date.
What to do: Nothing to do if the service date is correct.
- Code
- 53
- Description
- Paid per a previous Schedule of Benefits
Explanation
Updated October 26, 2026
OHIP paid this line under an earlier edition of the Schedule of Benefits that applied on the service date.
What it means
Code 53 means the fee was allowed according to the matching item in a previous Schedule of Benefits.
OHIP pays the fee in effect on the service date. If the service date is before a fee or code change, the older rules and amounts apply.
Common causes
- The service date is before the effective date of a new fee
- The code changed between Schedule editions
How to fix it
- Check the service date and the fee in effect on that date.
- If the service date is correct, there is nothing to fix.
- If the service date was keyed wrong, or the amount doesn't match the older Schedule, send a Remittance Advice Inquiry (RAI) through eSubmit, or on form 0918-84, within 7 months of the RA date.
Don't resubmit if
- The service date is right and the older fee applies.
- The claim is already on the RA. Changes to a claim on the RA go through an RAI, not a new claim.
