DP — Earlier procedure allowed at 50% with this one - fee adjusted to pay the difference

Paid the difference at 50%

An earlier procedure is only payable at 50% with this one, so OHIP paid the difference on this line instead of recovering money.

What to do: Add the two payments together; if they equal the main procedure plus the other at 50%, nothing to fix.

Code
DP
Description
Earlier procedure allowed at 50% with this one - fee adjusted to pay the difference

Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

DP means an earlier procedure is now counted at 50% alongside this one, so OHIP paid only the difference on this line. Usually nothing to fix.

What it means

DP appears on the Remittance Advice (RA) when OHIP has already paid another procedure for the patient and, under the Schedule, that earlier procedure is only payable at 50% when done with this one. Instead of recovering money from the earlier claim, OHIP reduces this line and pays the difference.

Several parts of the Schedule pay additional procedures at 50%. For example, when more than one cardiac catheterization procedure is done at one sitting, the additional procedures are payable at 50% (page J9).

Common causes

  • Two procedures for the same patient were submitted on separate claims or on different days, and the first one processed was paid in full
  • The procedure billed later carries the higher fee, so the earlier one became the 50% procedure

How to fix it

  1. Find the earlier claim for the same patient and add the two payments together.
  2. Check the total against the Schedule: the main procedure in full plus the additional procedure at 50%.
  3. If the total is right, there is nothing to fix.
  4. If you think the payment is wrong, send a Remittance Advice Inquiry (RAI) through eSubmit, or on form 0918-84, within 7 months of the RA date, with supporting details.

Don't resubmit if

  • The claim is already on your RA. A new claim for the same service will be treated as a duplicate. Use an RAI instead.
