- Code
- EQ2
- Description
- Specialty code inactive or not registered on service date
Explanation
Updated October 26, 2026
EQ2 means the specialty code on the claim isn't one the physician has registered and active with the Ministry on the service date.
What it means
Each claim header carries a two-digit specialty code, such as 00 for Family Practice and Practice in General. OHIP checks it against the specialties registered to the billing physician.
EQ2 means the specialty sent wasn't registered for that physician, or wasn't active on the service date. The claim isn't assessed until it's corrected.
EQ2 is about the specialty itself. If the specialty is registered but can't bill the fee code you used, OHIP returns A4D instead.
Common causes
- The wrong specialty code set up in the billing software, or a typo.
- Billing under a newly certified specialty before the Ministry registered it.
- A specialty that ended or changed before the service date.
- A physician with more than one specialty billing under the wrong one.
How to fix it
- Check which specialty codes the physician has registered with the Ministry, and their effective dates. The Service Support Contact Centre (1-800-262-6524) can confirm this.
- If the claim used the wrong code, correct the specialty and resubmit.
- If the physician should hold that specialty, have the registration updated first, then resubmit.
- Fix the specialty in your billing settings so new claims don't reject the same way.
Don't resubmit if
- The specialty on the claim still isn't registered for the physician on the service date.
- You're only changing the specialty to make the claim pass. The specialty must match the physician's registration and the service actually provided.
