Explanation
Updated October 26, 2026
L2 means this service isn't payable to the medical laboratory director. Check who should bill it.
What it means
L2 means the service billed is not payable to a physician acting as a medical laboratory director.
How to fix it
- Check whether the service is one a laboratory director may bill.
- If the service belongs to the laboratory, it is billed by the lab, not by the director.
- If you believe the decision is wrong, send a Remittance Advice Inquiry (RAI) through eSubmit, or on form 0918-84, within 7 months of the RA date, with supporting details.
Don't resubmit if
- The line is already on your RA. Question it with an RAI, not a new claim.
