Code
P3
Description
Maximum newborn care fee reached

Explanation

Updated October 26, 2026

P3 means newborn care was already paid for this baby. Newborn care is limited to one per patient unless the baby moved to another hospital.

What it means

Code P3 means OHIP did not pay this line because the maximum fee allowed for newborn care has been reached.

Newborn care (H001 for family practice, H261 for paediatrics) is the routine care of a well newborn for up to the first ten days of life, in hospital or at home. It includes the first general assessment and later assessments. It is limited to one per patient. The exception is a well baby transferred to another hospital: then a physician at each hospital may be paid (GP32–GP33).

Common causes

  • Newborn care billed by more than one physician for the same baby
  • Newborn care billed again for a later visit in the first ten days
  • A transfer to another hospital that OHIP did not know about

How to fix it

  1. Check who was paid newborn care for this baby, and on what date.
  2. If the baby was not well, newborn care is the wrong code. The Obstetrics preamble says a sick baby is billed with a general assessment and daily visits instead (K3, paragraph 12).
  3. If the baby was transferred to another hospital, send an RAI explaining the transfer so the second newborn care fee can be considered. Send it through eSubmit, or on form 0918-84, within 7 months of the RA date.

Don't resubmit if

  • Newborn care was already paid once and there was no transfer to another hospital.
  • The claim is already on your Remittance Advice. Use an RAI, not a new claim.
