Explanation
Updated October 26, 2026
VJ8 means a stale-dated claim: it reached OHIP more than three months after the service. Use the stale-dated process if it was first sent on time.
What it means
VJ8 is listed by the Ministry as "Stale-dated Claim Encounter". A stale-dated claim is one submitted more than three months after the date of service. OHIP rejects these unless they qualify for stale-dated processing.
It sits next to VJ7 ("Stale-dated Claim") in the Ministry's list. The Ministry does not explain how the two differ.
Common causes
- The claim was first submitted more than three months after the service date
- A claim that rejected for another reason was corrected and resent after the three-month window closed
- A wrong service date makes the claim look older than it is
How to fix it
- Check the service date. If it was typed wrong, correct it and resubmit.
- If the claim was first submitted within three months of the service date and later rejected, use the stale-dated resubmission process: send one stale-dated claim file through MCEDT, then email [email protected] with the Error Reports showing the original submission date.
- If the claim was never submitted within three months, it is generally not payable. The Ministry's billing brief explains the limited exceptions.
Don't resubmit if
- The claim was never submitted within three months and no exception applies.
- You are resending it as an ordinary claim. It will reject again.
How APEX handles it
APEX reads your error reports and remittance advice from MCEDT and lists claims rejected with this code in its Correction Centre for you to correct and resubmit. See how APEX works · Pricing
