Error code
VP — Allowed with special visit only
Needs a special visit
This service is only paid together with a special visit, and no qualifying special visit premium was paid on the claim.
What to do: Check whether the visit was a patient-initiated special visit with a premium claimed and paid; if it wasn't a special visit, nothing to fix.

Explanation
Updated October 26, 2026
Code VP means this service is only paid with a special visit. Without a qualifying special visit premium, the line was refused.
What it means
Code VP means the service on this line is allowed only together with a special visit. The Ministry's description gives no more detail.
A special visit is one the patient (or someone for them) starts for a non-elective service, which pays special visit premiums on top of an A-prefix assessment (Schedule GP65). Some services and premiums only pay in that setting.
Common causes
- A premium billed without a matching special visit premium on the same claim
- A special visit premium that was itself refused
How to fix it
- Check whether the visit qualified as a special visit and whether a special visit premium was claimed and paid.
- If the visit was not a special visit, there is nothing to fix.
- If you believe the payment is wrong, send a Remittance Advice Inquiry (RAI) through eSubmit, or on form 0918-84, within 7 months of the RA date, with supporting details.
Don't resubmit if
- You disagree with how a claim already on the RA was paid. Use an RAI, not a new claim.
