OHIP billing code for urinalysis
Updated October 26, 2026
The OHIP billing code for an office urine dipstick is G010A ($2.64), one or more parts of a routine urinalysis without microscopy; with microscopy of a centrifuged specimen, bill G009A ($4.90). Both are payable only when the test is done in your own office for your own patient and the result, interpretation and treatment decision are charted.
| Code | What it is | Fee | When to bill it |
|---|---|---|---|
| G010A | One or more parts of a routine urinalysis, without microscopy | $2.64 | Dipstick testing (SG, pH, protein, sugar, haemoglobin, ketones, urobilinogen or bilirubin) in your office. |
| G009A | Routine urinalysis including microscopy of a centrifuged specimen | $4.90 | You also do microscopy of a centrifuged specimen in your office. |
How to bill it
Do the test in your office for your own patient, and chart the result, your interpretation and the treatment decision (J65).
Bill G010A for a dipstick, or G009A if the urinalysis includes microscopy. Bill it in addition to the assessment for the visit (J3).
Don't add G700A: office urinalysis isn't a (+) procedure (J68).
If you send the urine to a lab, the lab bills the test; you don't bill G009A or G010A.
Billing rules
- Office lab tests are insured only when you, or a physician substituting for you, do them in your own office for your own patient (J65).
- The chart must record the result, your interpretation and the treatment decision based on it, or the test isn't payable (J65).
- Not insured for monitoring adverse effects of a calorie-restricted weight-loss program (J68).
- G010 is payable on the same day as counselling by the same physician; G009 isn't (GP58).
- May be delegated to a trained employee in your office, even when you aren't on site, for your own patient; chart who did it. Not payable when that person is employed by a hospital, public health unit, long-term care home or Family Health Team (GP62–GP63).
- For a nursing home or home for the aged patient under W010 monthly management, office lab tests by any physician that month are included in W010 (GP51).
- Codes in the separate Schedule of Benefits for Laboratory Services apply only to licensed laboratories, not to office testing (J65).
- FHO: G009A and G010A are core (in-basket) services (Agreement p.76).
