Explanation

Family physician's assessment of their own patient in an emergency department funded under an ED alternative funding agreement (ED-AFA).
What it covers
A100 is an assessment of a patient by the patient's own general or family physician in an emergency department funded under an Emergency Department Alternative Funding Agreement. It must meet at least the requirements of an intermediate assessment (A7).
It includes any re-assessment by you in the ED during that visit and any collaboration with the ED physician. It is payable only when your attendance is needed because of the complexity, obscurity or seriousness of the patient's condition (A7).
Billing rules
- Only for your own patient in an ED funded under an ED-AFA; in an ED not funded this way, bill other fee codes instead (A7).
- No other service, including special visit or other premiums, is payable to you for the same patient during the same ED visit (A7).
- Put the hospital master number for the emergency department on the claim (A7).
- If you admit the patient and remain the MRP, A100 is the admission assessment (A7, GP41).
- In an ED-AFA emergency department, A100 by the patient's own family physician is one of the few services still paid fee-for-service (GP110).
Common rejections
- EQL: A100 was billed under a specialty other than 00, or by a provider with an ED alternate funding (EDAFA) group number (Ministry error code list).
- EQK: The master number doesn't meet the criteria for A100, for example A100 billed with a specialty code other than 00; check the ED's hospital master number and your specialty (Ministry error code list).
